How do you recognise a serious heraldist? |
If you have decided to donate a new family coat of arms, you have the torture of the choice: To whom does one turn? The Internet is full of heraldry companies and Heraldikern which court your attention. Commercial suppliers of any complexion wait only for the fact that your looking look at them falls. With pleasure the searching buckles in the protecting arms which catch him willingly. However, exactly here I ask you a moment to pause: What do you want exactly? I think, a coat of arms which is a quality which would find recognition before the critical eyes of a Gothic herald and which is above all your right and remains. And, therefore, eyes on: Who of all suppliers guarantees for you
a) graphic quality (a lot of)
b) heraldic quality (some)
c) individuality (some)
d) check on uniqueness (completely a few)
e) legal security (completely a few)?
Who combines simply additive in the PC a few symbols and stereotyped coat of arms stones who owns, however, the size to create something new, individual and unique? Briefly: How do you recognise a serious heraldist? In addition I would like to list to you a few criteria. If you believe to have found a good supplier, ask quietly for the following points of view.
1.) It becomes recommended from serious and respectable heraldic institutions and associations (e.g., from the association HEROLD, est. in 1869, Berlin which leads the German coat of arms registration - Deutsche Wappenrolle), from historians or museums, from serious heraldic societies etc..
2.) He works together with the association HEROLD and the German coat of arms registration or with a comparably famous institution. In case of the "herold" become the registration documents at the same time component of the state archive. The association "Herold" is not, by the way, identically with many other institutions who also use the concept "Herold". The "Deutsche Wappenrolle" is not also identically with many other registers which also use the not legally protected concept "Wappenrolle".
3.) He will never move up from himself to you and offer to them his services by representatives.
4.) He leads no pompous name of his occupation or his company in which word shells like "academy", "court" should convey the impression of authenticity "Germanic", "tradition", "royal", "nobility", "royally", "European", "guild", "research", "historically" as well as doctorate and professor's title.
5.) He will never offer his services on measuring, exhibitions or in department stores.
6.)He can be full-time a free lance graphic artist or artist or pursue the heraldry as a hobby. In every case, however, he disposes of the enough artistic and heraldic abilities which he books to you with pleasure on the basis of own examples. Look working tests, above all those which were registered successfully in a respectable coat of arms role and were published! A good heraldist can sign itself. And his works fulfil the criteria of good heraldry as they are explained, e.g., on this web page. Try to get, a picture about the individuality and variety of his works, while you compare several works.
And - all-important - a good heraldist disposes of typical heraldic technical literature and reference books, if it is as a print media or in electronic form. He needs that above all to describe a coat of arms correctly to be able to submit (blazoning) and deliberate draughts of own resemblance check.
8.) He guarantees that the coat of arms resulted with his support the herald's committee of the German coat of arms registration is passed and is put down on the latter (or a comparably famous coat of arms role). He guarantees that the check on uniqueness and heraldic correctness is passed by his draught, and that, if against expectation a too big resemblance is ascertained to an existing coat of arms, the necessary changes or if the changes must be too substantial, a new draught are carried out without additional costs.
9.) He will not make the proposal to you indeed to find the coat of arms of your family under the already available one, because it is virtually excluded to discover an old coat of arms which may be led then by the persons concerned also really. Coat of arms-leading families know as a rule around her tradition and transmit the knowledge also about the generations.
10.) He will never claim himself the right „to give leadership authorisations“ or „to issue coat of arms letters“ – he does not own then the right. The acceptance of a coat of arms is a one-sided legal act of the founder. A coat of arms letter certifies the passed check on uniqueness and heraldic correctness as well as the registration in a card index. In this form this can exhibit, e.g., the herald's committee of the German coat of arms registration. The association Herold in Berlin can check by one of the worldwide biggest collections of German and international coats of arms whether the presented coat of arms is a unique specimen or a duplicate. Who is economical of himself from "leadership authorisation documents", makes itself to the pretense of wrong facts guilty. Since you will always have to put back when, nevertheless, in spite of the most intensive search somebody appears with older rights and asserts this. So is valid for you: The more thoroughly the search for similar coats of arms is carried out, the security for you is the greater! Exist in this point on extreme thoroughness, but a lot of money is put, perhaps, in the sand! The employees of the "Herold" work, by the way, in an honourary capacity.
11.) He will entirely develop a new coat of arms. Entirely is called that one begins with an empty sign to think to himself what the concerning family about Generationas new coats of arms develop in narrow, best of all also personal contact with the founder. As far as it is heraldically feasible, he will also consider the wishes of the coat of arms founder.
12.) It becomes the new coat of arms in narrow, develop best of all also personal contact with the founder. As far as it is heraldically feasible, he will also consider the wishes of the coat of arms founder.
13.) He will look not in the PC „Yes, we see sometimes what we have then here“, but specific features of the founder's family (possibly not of the founder alone!) like family native country, meaning of the name, to long-standing possession, about generations prevailing occupations and family situations ask and consider whether of it heraldically something can be used. In the case of doubt he will make clear himself, however, not for additive Small-small, but for graphically, decide varied, coherent and well-balanced draught and suggest to you this. Coats of arms were first of all a clearly recognizable sign, and today good coats of arms are it also.
14.) He will get involved in no compromise which is not compatible with the ancient rules of the heraldry. He will break not to the founder to fallen ancient rules, but point out this to the fact that a little bit timeless valid is created. The draught of a new coat of arms sign begins as a rule with a huge number of ideas by which only a few can be really realised without endangering the graphic coherence.
15.) He will explain the principal not with word shells like "golden coinage", "high grade", „real greaseproof paper“, "hand-made paper" etc. fully go on and on , but from the outset the division of the problems: The heraldist moves the ideas and creates the heraldically correct graphic arts. The Herold's committee or similar checks whether the principal can make the coat of arms his right. The principal makes the coat of arms by acceptance as a result his legal title. The German coat of arms registration supra publishes. If the principal wishes hand-made paper and golden coinage or even real greaseproof paper, he can order them of course from the graphic artist, that will be glad. But neither by golden coinage nor by hand-made paper you acquire rights! For the registration in Berlin supra ä. inevitably are in graphic arts, however, only one clean colour representation and a black and white representation capable of reproduction on quite normal white copying paper.
16.) In his fee everything is included: Draught. if necessary his change / en, the accurate black and white reproductive presentation necessary for the registration, the correct Blasonierung (description of the coat of arms after the heraldic technical language) and the consultation by the registration in the DWR or similar, as well as coloured graphics for the principal. The costs for the registration are not included in it, the coat of arms founder, e.g., transfers this directly to Berlin to the herold's committee of the German coat of arms registration.
17.) He will request only then his well-earned fee for the principal if, e.g., the herald's committee of the DWR has given “green light" for the registration of the new coat of arms.
18.) He will transfer the rights of use the picture to you after end of the works and occurred registration into the coat of arms registration. The customer should pay attention to the fact that he gets the entire rights of use what guarantees for him that nobody may otherwise use the coat of arms drawing. Here there are many misunderstandings. Basically is to be separated between the coat of arms which is enough defined by the Blason of the same, and the elevation. This coat of arms in itself, a definition in describing words, is defeated with the registration in a coat of arms registration by the unlimited and sole use right of the personal group agreed in the leadership authorisation. However, the customer receives from his Heraldiker also graphic arts, the artistic and individual conversion of the Blason into a piece of art. In it the copyright has of the heraldist, and he cannot dispose of this. He is able and, however, will transfer to you the rights of use the picture which entitles you to the unlimited use just of this drawing. Do not get this, could otherwise use a) of the artists the draught or limit the use b) to you. Please, cleanly distinguish: The right in a coat of arms, defines by the Blason, has the coat of arms-leading family. The artist has the right in an elevation (in the drawing) first of all. An artist may draw foreign coats of arms, but not lead the coats of arms. A coat of arms owner may lead his coat of arms always, but for the use of an elevation he needs the permission of the originator. A serious heraldist will transfer the unlimited right of use the graphic arts to you, hence, always.
There is really a whole series of good Heraldiker which fulfil every single one of the abovementioned criteria. They get the addresses, e.g., with the association "HEROLD" in Berlin: HEROLD, association for heraldry, genealogy and related sciences to Berlin inc., founded in 1869, Archivstr. 12-14, D-14195 Berlin or at a comparably famous institution.
